I Am Monster

by Zach Morin

I think…
Today’s the day.

I don’t remember
anything before this.
This living room,
these people and things;
my own personal
fireflies in a jar.
Struggles born here,
died here…
settled here;
one flicker at a time.

I could never understand
why, or when,
they all come
and go.
I just breathe,
and watch
as they all
call me Monster.

In each
morning’s light,
an adventure of life
awaited.
“Show me________”
I would silently command!
And the blank
has been
forever filled in:
A girl, a man, a woman, a dog,
happiness, anger, laughter, love,
Christmas lights, Easter eggs, Halloween costumes,
elves on the shelf, fall décor, Thanksgivings,
New Year’s Eves, Super Bowls, parties, strangers,
World Series, Barbie, Disney, laughter,
Hot Wheels, ponies, love,
yelling, crying, absence, loss,
new people, old people, old dogs,
new tricks…love.
Food, water, nuzzles, yogies,
celery days, carrot sticks, clean beds, love,
songs, singing, sleeping, laughter;
always though,
the girl and the man.

Days stacked on
days,
looked like heaven
from here,
the spaces
between the wire;
a beautiful view.

The girl’s grown now,
she took me out
recently.
The man looks older,
his face hair
feels good on my face,
as he says goodbye.
And THIS dog is still
sniffing and loud.

It’s too bad…
Today snuck up on me,
like summer thunder.
The dog’s here,
she’s sniffing again
and trying to say something;
it’s hard to hear,
the fan’s blowing,
I think it’s time
I think it’s time
I think it’s time
I think…
